Oral Cancer Awareness

Did you know that April is Oral Cancer Awareness month?  When you think of oral cancer and the reason behind those diagnosed with it, you probably think that the use of tobacco was the cause, however, the fastest growing segment of oral cancer is in young healthy non-smoking individuals through the transmission of the HPV virus.  The use of tobacco and alcohol are still major risk factors.

Approximately 43,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral cancer every year.   While most people think oral cancer is rare, over 100 people are diagnosed with it each day in the US alone.  Oral cancer takes a life every hour of every day.  With early detection, individuals who are diagnosed with it have an 80 to 90% survival rate.  The best way for early detection is to receive regular check-ups with your dentist, as they are your first line of defense against oral cancer.
