What Is IV Sedation Dentistry?

IV Sedation Dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, is a dental technique performed by a trained professional known as a sedation dentist. This is when an anesthesia is used during a dental procedure allowing the patient to fall into a state of deep relaxation. By using sleep dentistry, a patient can be put in a conscious or an unconscious sedative sleep state. If you are someone who suffers from anxiety, has a fear of dental work or have issues with your personal space being invaded, then sleep dentistry may be a great option for you.

IV Sedation Dentistry is a procedure where the sedation medication is delivered directly into the patients bloodstream creating a quick relaxed state. The intravenous sedative put a patient into such a relaxed state that sometimes they will not recall the procedure but are able to respond to instructions from the dentist.

The process of sleep dentistry is most often used during procedures where the patient is having a painful or long procedure, or has dental phobia due to natural fear or a traumatic experience during a dental procedure. Sleep dentistry is often used in pediatric dentistry as children are easily frightened and most times are fidgety while sitting in the dental chair. Most areas of the country have pediatric sedation dentists available.

If you struggle with fear and anxiety when visiting your dentist, contact your Chandler family dentist Impressions Dental at 480-814-8888 to schedule an appointment with our sedation dental specialist Dr. Tye Thompson DDS, or to discuss your options and see if sleep dentistry is the right option for you.
